What are Matthew Homes? Matthew Homes is an affordable housing initiative created by ReNew Communities, a faith-based 501(c)(3) non-profit. We provide high-quality housing opportunities for low- and middle-income families. Our homes are intentionally clustered together to foster a sense of belonging. The program is built on the belief that a thriving community starts with families who are committed to knowing their neighbors, caring for one another, and investing in the well-being of their city.
What is ReNew Communities? ReNew is dedicated to a strategic model of homeownership, job growth, and community engagement. Led by John Revenaugh and Dr. David Weil—who lives in North Chicago alongside his wife, Susan, and other dedicated staff families—ReNew is deeply rooted in the neighborhoods we serve. Together with the Surber family and our local partners, we are working to bring lasting transformation to North Chicago. Learn more about ReNew here.
Why North Chicago? North Chicago is a city of 16,000 people with incredible assets and untapped potential. However, it also faces significant challenges: double-digit unemployment, struggling schools, and the absence of a local grocery store. The most critical issue is the homeownership gap. While Lake County averages a 75% homeownership rate, North Chicago sits at just 34%. Social science shows that when homeownership dips below 70%, communities often face instability. By increasing homeownership, we empower residents to engage more deeply with their schools, city services, and local safety, ultimately driving economic and social well-being.
How much will each home cost? Our acquisition team works tirelessly with the City of North Chicago and local realtors to find structurally solid properties at the best possible price.
These totals include the property purchase, materials, labor, and administrative costs. Final pricing often fluctuates based on volunteer skilled labor and in-kind donations, which help us keep these homes affordable for our families.
